I'm back, and this time with a training camp edition of Reading the Offseason Tea Leaves. I've been scouring the internet for camp highlights, interviews, beat reports and goofy team-bonding content from NFL socials for over two weeks. All of the content is on my Bluesky. Cyrus Allen
Cyrus Allen has been the player I've called my biggest shot on after having the chance to interview him with Optimus Fantasy and watch him live at the Senior Bowl. His content was my favorite to make because he runs his routes with suddenness and nuance, without wasted motion. He was also making nasty contested catches, which has translated over into the Kansas City Chiefs training camp.
From New Orleans to the SEC and Back
Allen is running with the 1s at training camp. His journey to becoming a camp darling starts with his roots in NOLA, idolizing Odell Beckham Jr. He was only a three-star recruit coming out, and after a 46 catch 778 yard season in his sophomore year at Louisiana Tech, he transferred into the SEC to play at Texas A&M. Allen ended up suffering a season ending arm injury as an Aggie, and entered into the transfer portal again winding up at Cincinnati.
Senior Bowl Standout, Combine Snub
He finished third in the nation with 13 TDs in his Senior year at Cincy. He received an invitation to the American Bowl, where he tore it up, earning an invite to the Senior Bowl just four days later. Cyrus Allen quickly stood out as a top-tier route runner amongst his peers. The Senior Bowl is essentially an all-star game for the eldest prospects who have declared for the NFL draft. Allen has no problem routing up the top DBs in attendance.

Allen didn't lose steam heading into the draft, where he was one of the most frequently requested players amongst the NFL for Top 30 visits. The Chiefs selected him with the 176th overall pick in the fifth round.
All offseason, there has been positive buzz coming from those in attendance at Chiefs camps on Allen. His charisma shone at the Senior Bowl and carried over into one of his first podium appearances, as he joked about Travis Kelce's impact on Kansas City.

Chiefs Training Camp Darling
As soon as training camp started, he was seen making highlight grabs. So many highlight grabs. Andy Reid is talking about Patrick Mahomes' trust in Allen. Then he injured his leg and was carted off the field.
Uh, yeah. I think Mahomes trusts him plenty 📈

A learning moment for fantasy managers. Being carted off the field is typical at camp because camps are often held in locations far from facilities for medical attention. Teams are overcautious and will opt to bring the cart out for most injuries. Cyrus Allen missed camp for a little over a week and picked up where he left off with a TD during a scramble drill with Patrick Mahomes and the first-team offense.
Cyrus Allen's talent is undeniable; his QB and coaching situation are among the best in the league, and the WR room ahead of him has enough ambiguity that he may emerge as a top option at some point. Seriously, it's Rashee Rice who hasn't played a full season since his rookie year, and Xavier Worthy who's still being nagged by shoulder injuries. If Allen continues to excel when given opportunities, he may wind up Patrick Mahomes #1 target when Kelce retires.
In Allen's first preseason game, he was targeted five times and caught two passes for 20 yards, including this play, where he elevated to pull in a pass overthrown by rookie QB Garrett Nussmeier.

Cyrus Allen Dynasty Value
My advice to you as a fantasy manager would be to pay the premium on Cyrus Allen's camp hype. The hype has persisted since the end of his senior year at Cincinnati, and he is in one of the most enviable environments for fantasy football production. If it helps, I would personally cap my dynasty offer at a backend 2027 second, wanting an additional piece on top of Allen.
Cyrus Allen Redraft Advice
In redraft, I wouldn't pick him before the 12th round. Once his fellow rookies KC Concepcion, Denzel Boston, and Omar Cooper Jr. are off the board, I'd be ready to pull the trigger on Allen. If he isn't earning snaps by Week 4 and there are other lotto tickets available on the waiver wire, I would drop Allen and hope you can pick him up later in the season if he eclipses 60% of the WR snaps.
2026 and 2027 Fantasy Outlook
Cyrus Allen told me he models his game after Davante Adams and Keenan Allen. His talent has translated well against NFL-caliber players. In 2026, he has the chance to develop into a weekly WR3-4 by the end of the season. If one of Rice or Worthy has to sit out, he holds WR2 upside. By 2027, he may be discussed as a breakout player and be projected in the WR3 range. The arrowhead is pointing upwards.
