Dynasty Discussion: Sell High or Stay on the Ride

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – dynasty is a game of ebbs and flows. The dynasty market is constantly changing and adapting to what is happening on the field. Players’ values change rapidly, and if you aren’t ready for when a certain buy or sell window arrives, you could be missing your chance to improve your roster.

This week, I want to talk about the notorious “sell high” theory of trading away players. It’s a tricky question, whether to trade a player at the height of their success or to stick with them in hopes of finding continued success. Many managers have to make tough decisions eventually. After this week’s slate of games, a few players are now entering the “decision zone.”

Let’s talk through it!

Javonte Williams, RB, Dallas Cowboys

Week 1: 15 Carries, 54 Yards, 2 Receptions, 10 Yards, 2 TDs (RB3)
Week 2: 18 Carries, 97 Yards, 6 Receptions, 33 Yards, 1 TD (RB4)

Rebuilding: Sell
Contending: Ride it Out

The biggest surprise of the season is undoubtedly Javonte Williams. Coming off a forgettable year in Denver, Williams joined the Cowboys on a one-year “Prove it” deal where he would be the de facto lead back in a room alongside Miles Sanders and rookie Jaydon Blue. Fantasy owners were very much out of Williams, as shown by his pre-season rank of RB34.

Now, through two weeks of play, Javonte Williams is sitting comfortably at RB2. What do we do with this sudden windfall in dynasty?

Simply put: if you are a contender that has somehow stumbled onto an RB1 sitting at the end of your bench, congratulations! You now have a new worthwhile asset that can help you on your journey to the playoffs and beyond. You’ll want to hold onto that to protect yourself from any unforeseen obstacles.

However, if you’re rebuilding, now may be a good time to capitalize on a sudden uptick in value for a running back we had initially abandoned. Surprise running back studs can sometimes shake up a potential tanking effort by accidentally winning you games. Might as well sell Williams off to gain some draft capital.

As we all expected, the top players in my DYAR stats after two weeks are Daniel Jones passing and Javonte Williams rushing.(Puka Nacua leads in receiving, which makes more sense!)

Wan’dale Robinson, WR, New York Giants

Week 1: 6 Catches, 55 Yards (WR37)
Week 2: 8 Catches, 142 Yards, 1 TD (WR5)

Rebuilding: Sell
Contender: Sell

I never thought we’d be there. The former second-round pick out of Kentucky has finally found his groove with Russell Wilson in command. It’s exciting to see another wide receiver emerge from this offense, but it feels more like a mirage than a tangible achievement. Robinson has been a target-receiving machine that hasn’t been able to transform that volume into fantasy production. I’m a skeptic, and if this is something other owners are willing to buy into, then I would happily sell to the highest bidder.

If you’re feeling very bold, you could wait one more week to inflate his value further. Otherwise, now’s the time to sell if he’s sitting at the end of your bench.

Troy Franklin, WR, Denver

Week 1: 4 Catches, 44 Yards (WR49)
Week 2: 8 Catches, 89 Yards, 1 TD (WR8)

Rebuilding: Hold
Contender: Hold

I’m going to keep this one short and sweet. The Denver Broncos desperately need a second target in this offense, and it looks like Troy Franklin may be that player. He fell in the NFL draft, but he’s paired with his former college QB and is starting to heat up early in this season. He’s a young wide receiver tied to, what we believe to be, a good young QB. It’s the perfect situation to own as a dynasty manager. We want to hold onto Franklin for the foreseeable future.

Daniel Jones, QB, Indianapolis Colts

Week 1: 22/29, 272 Yards, 1 TD. 7 Carries, 26 Yards, 2 TDs (QB2)
Week 2: 22/34, 316 Yards, 1 TD. 6 Carries, 2 Yards, 1 TD (QB7)

Rebuilder: Hold
Contender: Hold

Wow, I can’t believe it either. Daniel Jones is looking like a competent, some could say even good, quarterback to start the 2025 season. Apparently, all it took was to leave New York for Jones to turn things around. I think we can capitalize on this resurgence and should ride it out for as long as possible. Jones is surrounded by great talent, which has allowed him not to need to do too much on any given play. Let Danny Dimes continue to guide your fantasy roster to victories.

As we all expected, the top players in my DYAR stats after two weeks are Daniel Jones passing and Javonte Williams rushing.(Puka Nacua leads in receiving, which makes more sense!)

Jake Browning, QB, Cincinnati Bengals

Week 1: N/A
Week 2: 21/32, 241 Yards, 2 TDs (QB14)

Rebuilder: Sell
Contender: Sell

I know what you’re thinking – he just got here! Why are we selling this poor backup QB before even starting him? We want to consider selling Browning on the promise that he can continue to support both Ja’marr Chase and Tee Higgins to the first buyer. You most likely picked up Browning off the waivers, which would mean anything you receive in return for Browning is an immediate value. Unless you are desperate for a QB, I would say feel free to trade Browning for any assets you can get.
