Thanks for making it this far (past the headline). Yes, in real life, I traded the one and only Joshua Patrick Allen for former number one overall pick Caleb Williams in a dynasty fantasy football league. No extra picks, no throw-in players, a true one-for-one trade. You might be asking me right now, “Why are you allowed to create dynasty fantasy football content?” Well, let me set the scene…

I Traded Josh Allen For Caleb Williams In Dynasty, And Here’s Why:

This is a 12-team superflex dynasty league. PPR scoring, two RBs, two WRs, TE, and two W/R/T flex slots as well. My team is currently in the middle of the pack, with limited upcoming draft capital to improve my team. I’ve done reasonably well this year, currently sitting in sixth place with five wins and four losses. My best players before the trade were Josh Allen, Bijan Robinson, and Trey McBride. It then drops off to players like Zay Flowers, Travis Etienne, Jameson Williams and Josh Downs

As an admittedly bandwagoning Bills fan (I live in Upstate New York, and what’s good for the Bills is good for my people), I really do love Josh Allen and will continue to root for him despite making the trade. I have no expectations for Josh Allen to slow down this year or even over the next few years. He’s a great player, and he truly is different.

When I look at the Bills and the Bears, they are in very different stages of their franchise journeys right now. The Bills have established themselves as one of the yearly Super Bowl contenders in the league. They know what they have in Allen and are ready to frame their entire franchise around winning a championship. The plan for the Bills right now is to get to the playoffs healthy, and that does not necessarily correlate with fantasy football goodness. They’re leaning heavily into the run game and are having a lot of success, and the defense is starting to get up to speed. This Bills team, with ultra conservative Sean McDermott, is not going to bend over backwards to get Josh Allen fantasy points, especially with no true alpha wide receiver on the team.

The Bears, on the other hand, are a team fighting against their own history, with something to prove. New head coach Ben Johnson is one of the best offensive minds in the league. After a historic season as Offensive Coordinator with the Detroit Lions, he could have had his pick of jobs in the NFL. He saw Chicago with Caleb Williams, Rome Odunze, D.J. Moore, and D’Andre Swift and decided that was the best situation to take over. The Bears have already looked drastically different than in 2024, averaging almost 100 more yards and nearly nine more points per game this year. The Bears are also one of the league’s worst defenses, allowing the 8th most points per game in the NFL. This should force the Bears into shoot-out mode a lot more often than the Bills.

It’s essential to remember that we are discussing two exceptionally talented players. They are the QB3 and QB10, separated by only 27 points on the season. Ultimately, I preferred Caleb for several reasons. Organizational direction and mindset, offensive weapons, sustainability of style of play, and age. Those four categories trend in Caleb Williams’ favor right now, despite trailing slightly in scoring in his age-23 season. I know I’ll get roasted for this trade ultimately because it’s obvious to say that Josh Allen is the better player right now on a better team. However, over the years, I believe Caleb Williams has the potential to score more points than Allen does. He fits my youthful team and will hold his value a lot longer than Allen as long as this season doesn’t start to drastically fall apart, which I don’t expect. I know most people don’t have the stomach to trade away a current superstar, and I may have pulled the trigger too early, as Allen is still in the prime of his career. I just like to take on a big risk that I think could pay off long term. We’ll see how it plays out this season and beyond.
